Opal Diffuser Canopy, 80 × 50 ft.

A designer steel canopy roofed in V-LITE® opal diffuser solid polycarbonate — a milky sheet that turns hard sun into even, glare-free daylight. The frame is iron square tube throughout: 2 × 4 in for columns and main beams, 1.5 × 3 in for rafters, purlins and the array sub-frame. Sixty solar panels sit on the east half in three rows.

What the model is built from

Plan size80 ft east-west × 50 ft north-south4,000 sq ft covered. The 80 ft face is the south front, so the roof slope and the array both look at the midday sun.
Roof sheetV-LITE® Opal Diffuser, solid compactA single dense polycarbonate layer with a light-scattering pigment. No flutes, no hollow cells - it diffuses rather than streaks, and it keeps solid PC impact strength.
Roof fall16 ft at the front to 13.5 ft at the back2.5 ft over 50 ft, a 5% fall into a concealed gutter on the north edge.
Primary steel2 × 4 in iron square tubeColumns are built up from four 2 × 4 tubes on a 10 in box with 1.5 × 3 lacing, and the main beams are shallow Warren trusses with 2 × 4 chords. That is how these section sizes carry a 16 ft bay - and it is what gives the frame its line.
Secondary steel1.5 × 3 in iron square tubeRafters, purlins, the west fin screen and the array sub-frame.
Solar array60 panels, 20 across × 3 rows2278 × 1134 × 35 mm portrait with 25 mm gaps. The array measures 23,155 × 6,884 mm - 155.0 m², 1,668 sq ft.
Array tilt22° facing southAt 22.72° N that is within a degree of the year-round optimum: about 100% of the sun on the panel at equinox noon, 92% in June and 91% in December.
Array positionSet to the east edgeA row of twenty is 75.97 ft, so it sits inside the 80 ft front with 4 ft to spare. The west bay stays clear opal roof.
Design movesFins, planters, concealed lightingVertical 1.5 × 3 in fins on the west elevation cut the late sun; linear lighting under the main beams turns the opal roof into a lantern after dark.

01Why opal, not clear

Clear polycarbonate throws hard shadows and hot spots. The opal pigment scatters the beam inside the sheet, so what lands below is even light with no glare and a lower surface temperature.

02Why solid, not multiwall

Solid compact has no cells to hold dust or condensation, takes a tighter radius and reads as one clean plane from below - which is the whole point of a designer canopy.

03Why built-up, not heavier

Four 2 × 4 tubes laced into a 10 in box carry far more than one fat section, weigh less, and read as a slim shaft from across the floor. The hollow centre takes the downpipe and the cable.

04Why the array sits high

Lifting the array on its own sub-frame keeps the opal sheet below continuous - rain runs clear, cleaning access stays open, and no fixing penetrates the weather surface.
